Phoenix owned, Torquay Ferry is the longest continual running public ferry in Australia and has been operating for 160 years across the Mersey River. The ferry connects Devonport city to East Devonport and is an icon to Devonport and surrounding communities. During the 1990s a private consortium of local businessmen consisting of Messrs. John Palmer, Chas Kelly, Una Rockliff, Denis Fieldwick and Duncan Fox saved the ferry from closure before selling to the local Phoenix Bus Company in 2007. In September 2011 State Govt removed all financial support for the Torquay Ferry. Fares are $ 2.50 each way for adults and $ 2 for children. The ferry runs from 7.30 am to 6 pm Monday to Saturday. Student groups are welcome for information sessions. Fares $ 1.50 per child and teachers/carers travel free. The owners Grant and Jan Bingley today continue to keep the operation trading, maintaining an important service to the people of Devonport and continuing the link joining East and West across the Mersey River. |
